Alex is the new specialist Conservation Tutor at West Dean College.

Full time students at West Dean recently spent a week with new tutor and specialist conservation blacksmith, Alex Coode, as part of the Conservation of Metalwork Graduate Diploma. The year-long course teaches the art  basic conservation skills, including working with the different metals groups such as hot metalwork in the forge. During the week students learnt to examine examples of heritage ironwork within the WestDean grounds, including the decorative gates to the Walled Garden and the 19th Century main gates to the College.

West Dean College has a world-wide reputation for the study of conservation, making and the arts. Many West Dean students go on to complete the MA in Conservation and often graduates go on to secure roles within prestigious heritage organisations, including two students this year who have secured apprenticeships at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.
